Kloshe Tillicum: Creating trustworthy and culturally meaningful public health guidance to address COVID-19 in Indigenous communities

Hours/week: 20-40 hours to be negotiated
Desired start-date: August 1, 2021 (flexible)
Contract length: 6-9 months, to be negotiated
Salary: $24 – $29 hourly, depending on experience
Location: Kloshe Tillicum operates out of the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) located in Vancouver, BC. However, job duties can be performed remotely; we welcome applicants from across BC.

 

Job summary

The Research Assistant will be responsible for supporting and coordinating research-related activities for Kloshe Tillicum (“Good Relations” in Chinook, a simplified language based on French, English, Chinook and other Indigenous languages and used throughout BC at the turn of the century to help with trade and communication between the settlers and the First Nations peoples), a collaborative project between researchers working within BCCDC’S Chee Mamuk program and Simon Fraser University (SFU).

Kloshe Tillicum builds on relationships between Chee Mamuk and numerous Indigenous communities through BC. Using Indigenous and community-led strategies, Kloshe Tillicum works with Indigenous communities throughout BC in order to assess community-led and culturally meaningful strategies to build trust with regard to the COVID-19 public health communications and response (e.g., testing, contact tracing, physical distancing, and vaccination).

 

About Chee Mamuk

The Chee Mamuk program within the BCCDC is a comprehensive, evidence-based, community-driven program that has been working in relationship with Indigenous communities across BC for 30 years. Our program provides innovative and culturally appropriate public health information grounded in science and tradition. The collective goal of the Chee Mamuk program is to develop programming and resources that are engaging and meaningful to communities in reclaiming culture and traditional teachings.

 

Tasks and Responsibilities

Research Assistant responsibilities will include:
– Scheduling and coordinating focus group and interviews in communities throughout the
province
– Liaise with diverse range of stakeholders to share and gather feedback on project findings
– Conduct focus groups and/or interviews with community members
– Work collaboratively with Kloshe Tillicum team members to analyze qualitative data
– Collate and synthesize findings from focus groups and interviews
– Assist with the creation of reports and other communication tools

 

Qualifications

– Previous volunteer or work experience in Indigenous community work and/or community-based research
– Commitment to the principles outlined in the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to
Actions
– Experience conducting qualitative interviews and/or focus groups and analyzing qualitative
data
– Ability and interest to work with a collaborative team, with members from diverse disciplines
and personal and professional backgrounds
– Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with
diverse range of stakeholders
– Willingness and ability to travel to communities throughout BC to conduct interviews and/or focus groups (as permitted by COVID-19 public health measures)
