Is it fat? Or is it VAT? Managing intra-abdominal fat deposits related to HIV treatment

HIV and medications used to treat HIV can cause abnormal fat distribution in your body. Visceral Adipose Tissue (or VAT) is a type of fat that is not found under your skin but it surrounds the internal organs. Too much VAT may make it hard to perform certain physical activities and it may reduce your quality of life. Excess VAT may also be associated with serious health issues, including: High blood pressure; Insulin resistance; Cardiovascular disease; High cholesterol and Diabetes.

VAT is a hard fat in more ways than one; people who are treated for HIV may find it difficult to manage excess intra-abdominal fat with diet and exercise alone. Dr. Bondy will help us to understand the health challenges dealing with this excess body fat and new therapies to help manage it to optimize health and quality of life.

The Treatment Update Series is an opportunity to learn about treatment updates and new therapies that aim to improve the lives of people living with HIV by helping to manage HIV disease, associated co-morbidities and, the side-effects from treatments. Treatment Updates are presented to Members of Positive Living BC; HIV-positive community members; Front-line service providers and Health Care Practitioners. This educational presentation is supported by TheraTechnologies Inc.
