OHTN – New findings on the impact of community-based HIV prevention programs

OHTNA new paper written by researchers from the OHTN, the AIDS Bureau, U of T and St. Michael’s Hospital has shown that community-based HIV prevention programs help avert new infections and save health care dollars.

Here are some key findings:

  • From 1987 – 2011, community-based prevention programs averted 16,672 new infections and saved the Ontario health care system $6.5 billion.
  • During that same 25 year period, Ontario tax payers saved $5 for every dollar invested in community-based prevention programs.
  • In 2011 alone, the $47 million investment in community-based prevention programs resulted in a savings of $289 million.

Our goal in writing the paper has been to provide community-based prevention programs with information they could use to demonstrate the huge value of their work. We’re now sending the original research paper, as well as a plain-language Q & A. The paper is Open Access, so please feel free to share these links with your colleagues.
