What is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, collaborative conversation style for addressing ambivalence and strengthening a client’s own motivation and commitment to change. Evidence shows this technique is very useful for empowering clients to change challenging health behaviors, such as problematic substance use. Staff members working in the mental health/wellness and substance use field may find this approach helps their clients move towards making positive changes in their lives, in ways that align with the clients’ own values.
