Positive Leadership Development Institute (PLDI)

 

The Positive Leadership Development Institute (PLDI) exists with the purpose of supporting people who are living with HIV/AIDS to realize their leadership potential and increase their capacity to participate meaningfully in community life. The Ontario AIDS Network (OAN) mentored PAN in developing these training modules, PLDI Honors the leadership of the past; Values the leadership here today; Inspires leadership for our future.

The PLDI is a three module leadership program:

  1. Core Leadership Training – Who am I as a leader?
  2. Bored? Get on Board! (Board governance training)
  3. Communication Skills Training
  4. Mental Health First Aid (Pilot module)

Core Leadership Training is a prerequisite for the other two modules of the training. Once you have completed the Core Leadership Training you can take the Bored? Get on Board! training or the Communication Skills training in any order you wish.


Core Leadership Training

PAN is hosting its 11th Positive Leadership Development Institute (PLDI) – Core Leadership Training at beautiful Loon Lake, in Maple Ridge B.C. on June 15 – 18 2017.

Core Leadership Training seeks to answer the question: “Who am I as a Leader?” The three main goals of the training are:
1. To identify personal values and philosophy;
2. To develop leadership skills and practices;
3. To gain community knowledge and awareness.

The curriculum objectives for the training are for participants to have the opportunity:
• To understand the 5 principles and 10 commitments of leadership
• To realize individual leadership potential
• To participate in building a network of leaders within the PLHIV community
• To realize the potential and strengths that each individual brings to the network
• To learn about and practice leadership skills in a safe environment
• To inspire others to become leaders
• To encourage participants to take on facilitator and mentoring roles within the community

Communication Skills Training

This training is only open to graduates of the Core Leadership Training.

The Communications Skills Training will explore the following topics through presentations, group work and discussions:

  • 5 practices & 10 Commitments
  • Structured Feedback
  • Effective Meetings
  • Active Listening
  • Dealing with Difficult Situations & Distracting Behaviors
  • Triggers
  • Facilitation Skills
  •  Presentation Skills/Public Speaking
  • Practicum – Participants are given the opportunity to develop and deliver a short presentation

We will start accepting applications Spring 2018

Bored? Get on Board!

PAN  will be hosted our fourth organizational governance training, Bored? Get on Board! on November 18 – 20, 2016 at the Vancouver Airport Marriott in Richmond.  This training was only open to graduates of the Core Leadership Training.


This professional development training is on board governance and will include topics such as:

  • Presentations and discussions on the voluntary sector in Canada
  • Board accountability and responsibilities
  • Board governance models
  • Dealing with difficult situations
  • Financial management
  • Understanding committee structures and purpose
  • Understanding potential conflicts of interest
